Summer Reading Program

image9801The TD Summer Reading Club runs every summer during the months of July & August. The Peace River Municipal Library invites kids ages 4-12 to participate in this fun interactive program. Every week, you are required to read 15 minutes a day for a total of 105 minutes a week. Once a week you visit the library to receive a stamp and the weekly prize. You also get to participate in a craft or activity with the other program participants.

At the end of August, the library celebrates the end of the Summer Reading Program by hosting a party. There are many prizes to be won. This program is free thanks to the sponsorship of TD Bank and Peace Library System.

Why is Summer Reading so important?

Studies show that children who read throughout the summer maintain their reading skills at a higher level than those who do not read. Participation in the Summer Reading Program has been proven to help children maintain these skills because throughout the summer months they are encouraged to read for fun and enjoyment.

Here are some tips to help make your child's experience with next year's Summer Reading Program a positive one:

  • help your child set a realistic book goal for the summer
  • establish a regular time for reading for all members of the family
  • show genuine interest in the stories or programs your child discovers
  • appreciate all the books your child selects, even the ones that look 'too easy'
  • read to your child
  • read yourself!
  • help your child attend special library programs throughout the summer
